3.2 Strunk and White

一本经典“小书”

谈到语文规范，不得不提 Will Strunk 和 E. B. White 的 The Elements of Style。 这本“小书”为美国康奈尔大学英文系教授 Strunk 于 1919 年出版[1]。 1957年，Strunk 当年的学生、时任《纽约客》杂志作者的 White 重新“发现”该书， 两人对原书做了一定的增订，与1959年发行了第二版，随后获得了极高的评价。

对该书的评价

时至今日，该书已经再版三次，累计销量超千万本，已跻身美国极具影响力的书籍之列， 甚至成为高中毕业生进学礼物的“标配”以及文字工作者案头必备的“圣书”。[2] 2011 年，该书被《时代》杂志评为 1923 年以来最具影响力的百本非虚构类书籍之一，[3] 如今，人们更多地以作者的名字 “Strunk and White” 作为对这本书的爱称。

美国诗人Dorothy Parker（1893-1967）在给年轻作者的忠告时这样说：

If you have any young friends who aspire to become writers, the second-greatest favor you can do them is to present them with copies of ‘The Elements of Style.’ The first-greatest, of course, is to shoot them now, while they’re happy. — Dorothy Parker [4]

第四版目录

那么，这是一本语法书吗？不完全是。我们不妨看看它的目录[5]：

  1. Elementary rules of usage
  2. Elementary rules of composition
  3. A few matters of form
  4. Words and expressions commonly misused
  5. An approach to styles (with a list of reminders)

实际上，只有第一章才涉及我们传统意义上的“语法”，其它各章则侧重句子和文章的结构 （例：第二章），在最新版本中还加入了一些关于写作的一般性建议。
